• CBS Sets Fall Schedule

    • Late last week, CBS went ahead and released its fall schedule, and I’ve noticed a change or two in their line up. Many were hoping Moonlight would somehow magically appear on their fall schedule, but there is no such luck there. For those waiting for the return of their favorite CBS shows, they really don’t have that long to wait. Everything new starts to hit the network the last week of September through the first week of October.

One big change I see is over on Tuesday and Sunday nights. With the cancellation of Shark, Cane not returning and some other moves, The Unit has moved from its Tuesday night slot at 9/8C to Sunday night at 10/9c. This means Without a Trace has moved to Tuesday night and a new series, The Mentalist, has taken the spot once home to The Unit. More new series are joining CBS’ line-up including comedies Worst Week and Project Gary.

I’m not sure on why The Unit was moved. The series has done well in its time slot, and Sunday has always seemed like such a dead zone to me. Just like Friday is on most networks. Some were saying The Unitmight not even return for a fourth season. Another possible casualty of the writer’s strike. However, in the end it was picked up and now moved to its new time slot. We will have to wait and see how it does on Sunday night. For a full list of premiere dates, check out Coming Soon.

    • To Be Scream Queen

    • That is what every little girl dreams of being someday. No, not really, but many love a good horror flick. The screams are the best part, and from what I hear those screams don’t come all that easy. Well, now VH1 is looking to make some lucky woman the next scream queen. Casting has already begun for Scream Queens, a reality competition series set to hit the network in the fall. Their will be eight episodes, and after the series is complete one lucky woman will win a role in a Lionsgate picture.

Now this one will either end up being really great or really bad. Reality television keeps looking for new things to do. I didn’t even watch the premiere of I Survived A Japanese Game Show this week because it just looked silly to me from the beginning. Moment Of Truth over on Fox is another reality show I will never watch because it just appears to be a show where you screw over the people you love. It somehow does well enough to stick around though. Go figure.

Everyone seems to want to jump into reality television though. Last week, I read that Janet Jackson will have her own reality show on MTV. It will air just before she goes out on tour. I remember the days when Real World on MTV was the only reality show on air. Now everywhere you look there is reality television that makes you wonder how realistic is it? Are they showing you everything or are they only showing you what they want you to see. That though is a question for another time!

    • Showtime Gets Busy

    • As we all wait impatiently for the return of Californication, Showtime is lining up even more new shows and some big names to their line-up. It’s been announced that George Clooney is taking his half-hour comedy to the network. It will follow the life of a man that has his life flash before his eyes after he jumps off of a building. Bob will take us back to what led up to him doing that. This one sounds interesting. Scratching my head a bit at the comedy part, but with George Clooney behind it I think it will be okay.

News also has it that Dexter has added Valerie Cruz to the cast. She will play the wife to the new character now being played by Jimmy Smits. We last saw him on Cane over on CBS, which was not picked up for a second season. Another casualty of the writer’s strike. I actually enjoyed this series though. It took a more serious look at the workings of a Latino family, and this is something I enjoyed. One of my favorite series was Resurrection Blvd, and there hasn’t been a show like this since it went off the air on Showtime.

One last addition in the works over at Showtime is The End Of Steve. This one brings Matthew Perry to the screen as he plays a talk show host that definitely has two sides to him. His on screen persona and his off screen one, which is entirely different. Matthew Perry also serves as co-creator on this project. I’ve always been a fan of his, so I’m looking forward to seeing this one. However, right now I need my Californication fix.

    • Let’s Do The Time Warp Again

    • Time is often played with when it comes to television shows, especially ones that go on for a great deal of time. You see more of this on the daytime dramas when characters disappear and then reappear months or years later looking much older than before they left. This is mostly done with children because it is far more interesting to write for teenagers with all their angst than it is for kids.

One Tree Hill jumped in time for the end of the high school years to past the college years just this season. Lost goes back and forth in time each and every week, displaying the past, present and the future in one episode. Now another series has decided to play with time, Fox’s 24. It is being said that when the series returns this season, we will have jumped in time four years. In fact, since the beginning of the series, there has been a seventeen year time span dealt with. Jack Bauer will now be a man in his fifties. Kiefer Sutherland is actually 41 years old.

I think a jump in time isn’t a bad thing. Series show snippets of the lives that would make interesting television. Not every moment is going to be television worthy. Playing with time allows things to happen. However, I do think some instances go so far. As I mentioned before, this happens mostly when it comes to daytime drama. Having a child leave as a toddler one year, and come back as a sixteen year old the next is stretching it!

I actually think Lost has dealt with time quite interesting. It was confusing at first, but it became easily to follow as the season moved on. I’m excited to see where the next season of Lost takes us. However, we will have to wait until 2009 to find out.

    • MVP Hits Soapnet

    • mvp-1060.jpgSummer heats up, and now we have a bit of a cool down as a new series hits Soapnet. MVP premiered this past Thursday, and we have a series that follows the lives of the players of a fictional hockey team, The Mustangs. We have everything you need for a soapy drama. The good guys, the bad guys, the innocent girl, and the bad girls. The opening episode showed the team at a turning point when one of their own passes away. This opens the door for new blood to enter the team.

We see the current members deal with the loss in their own ways, and we see some dirty dealings behind the scenes that leave the new widow and his daughter without money or a place to call home. I watched the episode with an open mind. I’ve always been a fan of soap operas, both of the daytime and prime time variety, and there really isn’t much on air right now at night to really fill that genre. We lost that when The OC went off the air. However, I’m not sure if this one will fit the spot. I will tell you why. This series opened up with every cliché in the book.

We have the good guy looking for love, and chasing after the innocent virgin. His following her from place to place doesn’t look the least bit attractive to me. In fact it borders on stalkerish. We have the small town farm boy making good, complete with girlfriend back at home who his mother hates. We have the opening sequence dramatic death. Then, we also have the bad boy videotaping all his sexual exploits only to have the tables turned on him.

It just seemed to take one thing after another. The series first aired on Canadian television, but it was not picked up for a second season. Soapnet is planning to air the ten episode season on their station. No telling if it will fair better and continue on for a second season on that network. Only time will tell.
