Showtime knows what to do when they have a hit show on their hands. They decide to keep it around for a long while. Earlier this year, they decided to keep Tudors around through six seasons and show out the rest of King Henry’s life, and now they have decided to renew Dexter for two more seasons. No, not just one. They want this one around for two more years. They have ordered seasons of twelve more episodes each. The first of the two seasons will start to shoot in the spring.

Dexter has been a surprise hit for Showtime. The series stars Michael C. Hall as a man that moonlights as a serial killer. The series has even been shown on CBS in an edited form, and the series will also make its way to Youtube. An order for two more seasons at once is a show of great faith in the popularity of the series and the writers behind it.

Showtime is a network with great programming though. It started years ago with Queer as Folk. That series is still shown in syndication to this day. The L Word will end its run in 2009, but it has already popped up in syndication as well. With series like Weeds, The Tudors, Dexter, and Californication, Showtime is set to continue being one of the dominant forces in cable programming. It is going up against HBO, which wins year after year. Dexter did win Best TV Show last night at the Scream Awards as well.

Yesterday, I expressed my disappointment in a show that came about because of the writer’s strike. Today, I’m going to balance things out with something positive. It’s the whole yin and yang thing.

CBS has decided to bring the off-beat crime show Dexter into its line-up. The show, which has had a two season run on Showtime (owned by CBS), is a crime drama. But a very unusual one. The show’s titular character, played excellently by Michael C. Hall, is a forensics expert. Nothing new there, especially not on CBS. The network is propped up by shows about forensics experts. Dexter is a bit different than the CSI leads. He’s not just a forensics expert. He’s also a serial killer. Imagine Gary Sinise trying to pull that one off.

I rejoiced in the news of Dexter’s promotion to the network. For a long time, I have considered HBO’s and Showtime’s original series to be the best. The Sopranos, The Wire, The Tudors, Six Feet Under, Dexter. If you want to see the best of the small screen you have to pony up the extra cash for premium channels. Broadcast has always played it safe. With Dexter (starting in February and running on Sunday evenings), it seems that a bit of TV’s cutting edge has made its way to the masses.

Here’s to hoping that Dexter is beginning a trend of bringing TV’s best to the big networks.
