Well, at least half of a second season. The FX drama will start its second season on March 2nd. However, because of the writer’s strike only 7 of the scheduled 13 episodes have been completed at this time.

I, personally, am looking forward to another FX show, The Shield, which will also begin airing in March. Unlike Dirt, the gritty cop shows season has been shot in its entirety. Still, in spite of myself, I am also looking forward to Dirt’s second outing. Here’s why.

Dirt pushes the envelope. It gives us characters we know we really shouldn’t like, then asks us to care about them enough to watch them week after week. I appreciate any show that puts that much faith in viewers. And I’m also happy that there are viewers out there who do not want to be spoon fed their TV (Dirt drew a couple million viewers per episode). Sometimes it’s fun to root for a character only to find out that they’re the bad guy.

For those of you unfamiliar with Dirt, it stars Courtney Cox (of Friends fame) as a ruthless tabloid editor who sends her desperate underlings to dig up the titular Dirt on Hollywood’s elite. It’s a rather dark premise but also funny, in a satirical way (perhaps something Evelyn Waugh would have wrote if he was alive today and under contract with FX).

Also, with the paparazzi now a central part of the Hollywood scene, I think Dirt is relevant. It gives us a glimpse of those who try to ride Hollywood’s coat-tails. Cox’s character, Lucy, is smarter than the people whose lives she publicizes. Perhaps I root for her because she is the average person’s revenge on the Hollywood elite, many of whom made it to the limelight by sheer luck. Does that make me a bad guy too?
