Law and Order Special Victim’s Unit is the most popular spin-off of the long running Law and Order. Since 1999, the show has boasted some good acting, great writing, and a fair amount of edginess. This season, though, things seem a bit different. The plots, the characters, all of it, seem a bit tired.

Christopher Meloni is still one of the better actors on TV, but the meaty elements of his character often get played off, making it seem like the show is moving in the direction of melodrama. The show has been particularly hard to stomach the past few weeks. A few weeks back, Meloni’s character, Elliot Stabler, was blinded during a confrontation with a criminal. Or was he? It turns out there was no permanent damage. I’m not the only one who wanted to see what Meloni could have done with that situation. In the following weeks, there was a car accident followed by a roadside baby delivery by Olivia Benson, (AKA ultra-popular Mariska Hargitay), and the ongoing romantic undercurrents between the two leads that threaten to turn into a soapy melodrama any week now.

What does SVU need? More Ice-T? As fun as that might be for a few weeks, Ice is probably best in his supporting role.

Somehow, the show’s powers-that-be have to get back to the show’s strengths or else just call it quits.
