• Oprah Loves Chicken

    • This is one of those stories that made me chuckle the most anything else has in awhile. Apparently, Oprah has joined forces with Kentucky Fried Chicken for a promotion of their new grilled chicken item. Oprah promoted the item with the promotion of a coupon, and when Oprah promotes something, it appears that people really listen.

She has her book club, even with its problems, and when she promoted this new item for Kentucky Fried Chicken, people really did listen. She told them to go to her website, grab a coupon and then go to Kentucky Fried Chicken. So many did that very thing, it is making the restaurant chain rethink their promotion.

They have been forced to give customers that come in for the promotion a rain check. That is how popular the promotion became. Advertising the connects television and celebrities to products isn’t new, but this is one time I see it working as well as this promotion has apparently.

Oprah looks to be one powerful woman. Her talk show still manages to bring in viewers, and she is always involved in some thing or another. I have not watched her series in recent years, but I have in the past. Something tells me we’ll see Oprah and the power of her persona for quite some time to come, even if the tabloids in the supermarket aisles are saying she has only three years to live. That is something for an entirely different time though! Did you go to KFC for their latest promotion?

    • Spotlight: Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman

    • Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman headed onto CBS back in 1993. A television series starring Jane Seymour as a female doctor making her life in the Old West. Moving to Colorado after living in Boston, she is entrusted with three children to care for after their mother dies of influenza. Over the years, we see her find love with a mountain man played by Joe Lando, and we see her grow up as well.

I remember tuning in to watch this one each and every Saturday for the six years it was on air, and it never disappointed me. It was a kind of show you didn’t see on television often. Something without all the sex, bad language and violence you saw on other shows. Sure, there was some drama, but it wasn’t like other series. It was simple, and just good plot with solid acting.

Each and every week you could get yourself lost in the little world they created in a time of the distant past. The series lasted for six years, and I think the series could have gone on for more, but it was a series that ended because they basically reached a point where the story had been told. The characters had found happiness and happily ever after was the best way to end things. A couple of television movies were made once the series ended, but that was that.

There are times I wonder about these characters now. What have they done in their lives since? With the release of the series on DVD in recent months, I wonder if there is ever any hope of CBS revisiting the series with another movie. Would you watch?

    • TV Is Bad For Kids

    • Over the past fifteen to twenty years, I have seen a number of studies that talked about the effects that television has on children. Back in my college days, I did my own research into the area for a project that looked at the effects television and violence on television had on children.

I had worked with children in a school setting, and I could see first hand just what effect violence on television had on some of the children I worked with. They would act out and live out whatever they happened to see on television. In their classroom and out on the playgrounds during recess.

Television is said to effect children differently, and a new study was released recently that says young children that spend too much time on television have a greater risk for developing asthma. This study focused on children under the age of five that spent up to two hours in front of the television instead of in the outdoors playing and exercising.

The effects television has on children has always been up to debate. More time spent on television lessens time for other activities, and it creates lazy children. Growing up, I know I watched a number of hours of television - from cartoons in the morning to the shows that hit on prime time. Looking at myself as example, I don’t see myself as lazy, but I know television has become a daily part of my life.

What do you think? Can television have an adverse effect on children that spend too much time watching it?

    • When Technical Difficulties Attack

    • I’m sure we have all had this happen at one point or another in our television watching lives. You turn on your television ready to watch your favorite television show, and there is a problem. A big problem, and nothing you do fixes it. You now have missed your favorite show, and if this was about ten years ago, this would be a big problem.

There was no such thing as torrents or watching episodes online. No chance to buy the episode on iTunes the next morning. You missed whatever you missed and that was that. Until the episode somehow repeated itself during the season or over the summer months, you just missed whatever happened.

This is what happened to me last night. Wednesday night. Any fan of television knows just what Wednesday night is. It is one of the biggest nights on television with Lost airing on ABC. Last night, I ran a few minutes late on the episode thinking my DVR would pick up as always.

When I finally sat down to watch five minutes after the show began, there was nothing recording. Turned on the television, and ABC was stuck on Wheel of Fortune. Went to check another television set, it was the same. This was annoying, but I knew I would be able to find the episode before the next day was out.

However, my brother brought up a good point. Advertising dollars. These were lost, and you have to wonder if this was just an issue that affected my city or a country wide issue with ABC. No matter the case, money was lost on advertising, especially with Lost being one of ABC’s money makers. Good thing is these days you don’t miss out as much as you did back in the old days.

    • Looking Back At 2008

A post about by Regina Avalos on January 3rd, '09

    • 2008 is now something only for the history books. It was the year that television was hit hard due to the writer’s strike, and an actor’s strike still looms in the future. 2009 has now begun, and television series that went on hiatus for the holiday break are now starting to return. Things have been quite quiet on the television news front the last couple of weeks, and  that should change in the next week or two.

The mid-season is ready to begin. We will see the return of Lost and American Idol in the next few weeks, and we should learn the fates of certain series that have been up for possible cancellation. One such series is Knight Rider that surprised me with a return on New Year’s Eve to NBC. NBC did make the biggest news of the year 2008 back in December when they announced moving Jay Leno from late night to a prime time 10pm slot.

Can Jay live in that slot? It would make things a lot easier for NBC if he could pull it off. We really won’t know until fall of this year whether or not NBC either came up with the best idea for their network ever, or if they just made one big mistake. Jay Leno will take the summer off before returning to NBC with the new series. It will be weird spending three months without Jay to keep me company on late night.

To everyone that stops by here regularly, have a great start to 2009. Regular almost daily updates should return here in the days ahead.
