Fox has announced that their hit series Prison Break will return next season for a fourth season. Their third season was cut drastically short due to the writer’s strike. Only thirteen episodes aired. For next season, there has been a twenty-two episode order placed. This has been met with a bit of chaos by fans. Some say the show just isn’t good enough as it is right now to return. They say it doesn’t have the same power as it did when the series premiered a few years ago. Others disagree, and they are happy to see the series coming back for another season. Will this fourth season be the series last? That is yet to be seen.

In other Fox series news, new series Canterbury’s Law has been moved to Friday nights. Anyone that knows Fox knows that Friday night is their dumping ground for shows that don’t have much of a chance of making it. The series premiered with low ratings, and they haven’t picked up yet. I really wouldn’t get too attached to this series if you’re watching it. Fox is notoriously hard on mid-season series. Very few actually see the fall.

As is the case with one series already this year. The Return of Jezebel James has already received the axe this spring. Their original thirteen episode order had been dropped to seven, and the show will fade into the oblivion that is Fox after only airing three episodes. This series was highly promoted being from the same creator as Gilmore Girls. That couldn’t help it though. Critics were hard on it from the very beginning. There still isn’t any word on whether or not another mid-season series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, will be returning next season. Terminator is a hot ticket right now though. Filming is soon to begin on the fourth movie in the series with a release date of May 2009. Bringing the series back might be a smart idea for Fox.

How many times can one man escape from prison? We might find out if Fox decides to renew the show for a fourth season. For now, though, there is no news and the show remains in limbo as its third season comes to an end.

I would be surprised if the show was not brought back. It has a large following, though it is not a ratings record-breaker. And Michael Scofield is no Jack Bauer, but if 24 has been able to sustain multiple seasons and keep a (somewhat) plausible storyline, why can’t Prison Break?

Maybe Scofield and crew could become prison escapers for hire or something. Anything. It would a shame for the gritty goodness to go away when plenty of lesser shows have lasted longer.

In fact, Prison Break producers are looking to keep the show alive in a different incarnation. Another show, this one called Prison Break: Cherry Hill is being created. This time, the breaking will take place in a woman’s prison. Before we accuse Prison Break of going all CSI on us, you have to compliment the show’s producers for a shrewd move. Even if one plot becomes implausible, there are opportunities to employ a similar idea in another setting.

That idea begs the question: how much of the show’s success is because of the actors and how much is because of the producers. There will have to be some serious casting questions before any spin-offs get started. They were able to find three respectable CSI leads. Does Wentworth Miller have 2 counterparts who can step up to the plate?

The popular show 24’s seventh season is in doubt. Fox has already filled the show’s usual time slot with the popular (but not equally popular) Prison Break. Both 24 and Prison Break share a gritty style and command an loyal following. However, the proven success of 24 will not help it in the face of the on-going writer’s strike. If only Jack Bauer could infiltrate the WGA and compel them, through any means necessary, to end their strike.

Meanwhile, Prison Break offers an exciting, interesting alternative to 24. The lead actor, Wentworth Miller, plays his character well. Micheal Scofield, a smart, somewhat quiet guy caught up in unusual circumstances, is one of the more interesting characters on broadcast TV.

Prison Break, like 24, did not fair well when its episodes were re-broadcast. Therefore, Fox has decided to run the show all the way through, after pausing for a brief hiatus until mid-January.

As for the future of 24, it’s still up in the air. There are rumors that it might be 2009 before the show fully returns.
