• Let’s Do The Time Warp Again

    • Time is often played with when it comes to television shows, especially ones that go on for a great deal of time. You see more of this on the daytime dramas when characters disappear and then reappear months or years later looking much older than before they left. This is mostly done with children because it is far more interesting to write for teenagers with all their angst than it is for kids.

One Tree Hill jumped in time for the end of the high school years to past the college years just this season. Lost goes back and forth in time each and every week, displaying the past, present and the future in one episode. Now another series has decided to play with time, Fox’s 24. It is being said that when the series returns this season, we will have jumped in time four years. In fact, since the beginning of the series, there has been a seventeen year time span dealt with. Jack Bauer will now be a man in his fifties. Kiefer Sutherland is actually 41 years old.

I think a jump in time isn’t a bad thing. Series show snippets of the lives that would make interesting television. Not every moment is going to be television worthy. Playing with time allows things to happen. However, I do think some instances go so far. As I mentioned before, this happens mostly when it comes to daytime drama. Having a child leave as a toddler one year, and come back as a sixteen year old the next is stretching it!

I actually think Lost has dealt with time quite interesting. It was confusing at first, but it became easily to follow as the season moved on. I’m excited to see where the next season of Lost takes us. However, we will have to wait until 2009 to find out.

    • As Another Strike Stares Us Down

    • katherine_heigl_120307_0001.jpgWe have two weeks before another strike can take our favorites movies and television series out of production once again, and things are starting to get scary. If things aren’t settled by June 30, we could see productions halted, and once again we could have blank television screens full of repeats. Many movie productions are trying to get things settled in the next week or two. If a strike does happen though, not every production will be ready for it.

As far as television goes, the Kiefer Sutherland series, 24, looks to be ready if a strike does happen. They have production mostly wrapped up on both the season and the movie prequel set to air this fall. Other series have at least several episodes of their next seasons already in the can and ready to go. These include such hits as Heroes and Grey’s Anatomy. However, a new season might be delayed. The ABC series has been under fire this week because of the comments made by one of the series’ stars.

Katherine Heigl plays Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy, and earlier this week she pulled herself out of contention for this year’s Emmy race. She won an Emmy last year for her role, but this year she doesn’t feel that there was enough there for her to receive a nomination. This has caused quite a stir among fans and non-fans of the show. Some see her words as ungrateful and biting the hand that has fed her so much success.

One writer has spoken out about her comments, and some are saying that Heigl’s time on the show is short. We all know they have no problems removing someone from the cast if an issue arises. Look at what happened with Isaiah Washington at the end of season two. Time will only tell if Heigl remains a part of the Grey’s Anatomy family.

    • More 24 This Fall!

    • Fox’s 24 is yet another series hit by the writer’s strike. The seventh season of the series should have aired starting in January, but first with the delay due to the star’s jail time, and then the strike the season of episodes was not completed in time. It was soon announced that fans of the series wouldn’t have any new material from the show until January 2009. This could be a long wait, and it could spell death for the series if the fans just don’t want to wait that long for new episodes. When the series does return then, fans may not want to tune in.

However, fans are going to get a small taste of 24 this fall. Fox has decided to do a two hour movie that takes place in between the two year period between season six and seven. We will have our first female president in the series, and it looks to be a go. The series is gathering its actors now, and the writers are hard working on a script. As for season seven, the cast will be hard at work filming the remaining episodes for that season starting in April.

Hopefully, the movie will hold fans over until the new season of 24 hits in January 2009. For now, fans have episodes of American Idol and New Amsterdam to keep them busy. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles ended its season this past Monday with a two hour event. No word yet on whether or not that series has a future next year on Fox. Only time will tell.

    • A Look Ahead: 24’s Seventh Season

    • Imagery relating to A Look Ahead: 24’s Seventh Season

I know that 24’s seventh season is a long way in the future. The show shut down after shooting just 8 episodes, meaning there is a lot of work left to do after things get moving again. The show’s producers and Fox network execs want to be sure that they will be able to air all 24 episodes consecutively. A week off? Unthinkable. The show’s hardcore following would riot. Still, it looks like things are settled in the WGA strike, so work should begin again soon. Here are some of the rumors surrounding 24’s seventh season. I’m not cool enough to be privy to any secret spoilers, but if you don’t want to know anything at all about the season, stop reading.  Now.

      OK?

Season seven will take place 3 years after season 6. Executive Producer Manny Coto told TV Guide that this season will be a bit of a departure from previous ones. “There will not be a ticking clock on a nuclear device [and] the villain is not a terrorist [but] someone with a supremely dark past who’s done something horrific and whose ambition is to regain his stature in the world. There may even be a plot thread that doesn’t take place on U.S. Soil.”

I’m glad to hear that. I was starting to wonder how many more intense seasons 24 could take. There is a fine line between shows that rely on suspense and those who become stale and comical because the characters are in the same situations again and again. I’m sure that, just because of its nature, 24 will continue to be a nail-biter. I’m interested to see how they handle a more low-key season.

Jack is supposed to be on trail for something related to his torture of a terrorist (screen-shot above). However, the show is not, apparently, going to turn into a courtroom drama. Fans wouldn’t allow it and the show’s producers have proved themselves too savvy to end the show on a sour note.

Several people involved with the show say that the season will not be as broad in scope as previous seasons. Things will be darker and more personal for all the characters. Here’s to hoping 24 can pull of a season that is unique enough to be interesting, but exciting enough to keep fans happy.

    • Kiefer Sutherland Begins Serving Time

    • Imagery relating to Kiefer Sutherland Begins Serving Time

Kiefer Sutherland will be spending the holidays in the last place you’d expect: prison.  The star of Fox’s mega-hit, 24, is beginning a 48-day stint at a minimum-security prison following a repeat DUI offense.  Kiefer had arranged for his prison stay to begin during 24’s Holiday hiatus, on December 21st, but, because of the writer’s strike, he asked to begin serving his time earlier.

According to TMZ, Sutherland will be spending his time working in the prison’s kitchen and also doing laundry.  That doesn’t exactly fit the “Jack Bauer” image, but, I guess, neither does getting caught driving drunk on multiple occasions.

Sutherland is known to be a bit of a partier; so, perhaps the drunk driving charges should come as no surprise.  But, you’d think that, for one of TV’s biggest stars, a limo would only be a phone call away.

At least Kiefer isn’t the first celeb to be guilty of bad judgment.

It appears that, regardless of what happens with the writer’s strike, 24 die-hards will have to wait at least 48 days before any news of the show’s return.
