Legenday rock bad, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, have filed a lawsuit against Showtime, the broadcasters of David Duchovny filled show Californication. The dispute is over the name of the show, Californication.

Back in 1999 RHCP recorded one of the greatest rock albums ever (in my opinion) and named it after the feature-single Californication, so obviously are a bit hacked off at Showtime using the name (which is pretty synonymous with the band) for their ground-breaking show. They didn’t even use the song as the theme tune…

Entertainingly, the show also features a character called “Dani California”, another song (more recent though) created by the chilli peppers.

Anthony Kiedis, the lead singer said Californication is the signature CD, video and song of the band’s career, and for some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right. I agree with every word he says, however the band is looking to secure a permanent injunction that would stop Showtime using the name Californication from that point onwards. I have to say, I don’t think they’ll be successful with this as the show has already been going for a while and is quite established.

If I was bringing this case against Showtime I think I’d be looking for a mention in the show credits and a royalty payment, maybe I’d insist on the show using the song as the theme tune. I think RHCP’s demand are slightly unreasonable and as a result they may end up getting nowhere.

It’ll be very interesting to see how this plays out, I’ve included Californication below (courtesy of Last.fm) for continued enjoyment.
