I wasn’t quite sure what to make of Cane before its late-September premiere. From the pre-season promos, it seemed to be akin to Dynasty and Dallas; soap operas that were dressed up for prime time.

Despite that vibe, the show’s stellar cast attracted my interest. Jimmy Smits has been one of TV’s best for a long time. Hector Elizondo and Rita Moreno have also had distinguished careers on the small screen. Polly Walker seemed a great addition given her performance on HBO’s Rome.

The show has proven itself interesting, at least. It is a little darker than I’d expected, but I’d still go with my initial though and put Cane in the category of prime time soap opera. But the acting is above par and the script does not detract from the efforts of Smits et al.

South Florida lends itself well to the story, makes somewhat tired plots of family feuding and underhanded business seem a little fresher. The local wildlife even played a part in a couple of the episodes.

To summarize: Cane is good. Yes it is a glorified soap, but it doesn’t try to be anything else. The acting is some of the best on TV right now.

Cane’s future is in doubt, however. The show will air its final episode of the season on December 18th. It was mostly unaffected by the writer’s strike since CBS only ordered 13 episodes, all of which were completed prior to the picketing.

CBS has yet to make any announcement about the show’s fate. The show’s numbers have been good, but the writer’s strike, though it did not infringe upon production, seems to have put Cane in limbo for the time being.
