Are Soap Operas In Danger?
-
A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that Days Of Our Lives had fired two of their most popular stars. They had both been with the series for years, but with this economy their salaries were just costing way too much. Now other soap operas are making changes with their own casts. Salaries are being cut, and now some are wondering if the day of the daytime soap opera is coming to an end.
ABC seems to be the one making the majority of the changes. They aren’t firing anyone yet, but they are cutting salaries where needed. One of those salaries being cut is of popular soap star, Susan Lucci. Apparently she makes approximately 10,000 per episode, and we know in the land of daytime television, they go year round, only taking weekends and a few holidays off during the year. That can add up, and she might be felling it in her pocket book.
General Hospital and One Life To Live are also being forced to make changes. No idea on what those are yet, but I’m sure we will find out sooner or later. As a fan of daytime television, I think the loss of the soap opera would be something felt by many. The networks don’t see them going away yet, but some are in danger of it. Days of our Lives and Guiding Light immediately come to mind. I would hate to see Guiding Light go especially. That one has been a part of my life for so long, but with the economy how it is these days, nothing is safe.

Days Of Our Lives Makes Cuts
-
Back in high school, I fell in love with an NBC soap opera. This was a huge deal because growing up, I was a die hard CBS soap fan. However, I tuned into Days Of Our Lives one day, and I was suddenly hooked. I no longer watch the series now, and I am still a CBS soap fan. Back in the summer before I headed off to college, I even visited the Burbank set of Days Of Our Lives at NBC. I met most of the stars of that time.
This was back in the days where Lisa Rinna played Billie and Patrick Muldoon played Austin. I met them both, and I also met the man that played by John Black. There was an embarrassing moment or two with these two actors, and I laugh at myself to this day about them. However, times are changing, and even long running television shows like Days Of Our Lives are having trouble finding the money to stay on the air.
In order to do that, they are having to make cuts, and the cut they have decided to make is to ax two of the most popular characters on the series. They have been there since my teens, and I know even long before that. Days Of Our Lives fans are losing John & Marlena. With the firing of these two actors, they will be able to keep the show on the air for another eighteen months, but you have to wonder if getting rid of their most popular characters might spell certain day for the daytime soap. Time will tell.

Guiding Light Might Shine Again
-
I’ll admit it. I am a soap opera nut. I grew up on the shows on CBS, and if I have a bad night and I’m awake at 2am I’ll turn on the episode of the day from my DVR and watch an episode. Just don’t have time to watch daily anymore. CBS daytime has changed a lot over the past year though, with the most change on Guiding Light. They changed things up with their filming. They decided to do live exteriors instead of using indoor sets.
The few times I have watched this past year. It just seemed weird to me. Not only that, but there were new faces I didn’t recognize, and I saw a few favorites vanish into the sunset. All of this has just been unsettling to a long time fan. However, there is news of a big change, and I can thank TV Squad for this little tidbit. They are bringing back Phillip Spaulding. That character had been a huge part of the series for many years, but after they made him lose him mind and turn into this evil bad guy he left the series. Now he will be coming back!
Phillip has been best played by Grant Aleksander, and he is the actor returning to the role for a long term stay starting in January. I am really excited to see what he does when he comes back to the show. I haven’t tuned in for a couple of months, but I might have to just to see what he will be returning to when he does return. It would be horrible to see this go after having such a long history, but they are losing viewers with this new approach of theirs.
