    • In a time where new programming is at a premium, new series coming in or those returning seem to be doing quite well. This week saw the premiere of both Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and American Idol. Terminator came in on Sunday night with the best ratings for a premiere on the network in three years. It’s time slot debut on Monday night knocked out American Gladiators. That series has already been renewed for a second season by NBC. Fox has eight episodes ready for Terminator and the series will go through March before its season finale.

I watched Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles because I’m a fan of the movies. The series takes some liberties with the story line in the movies, taking place in that dead zone of time between the second and third films. From the movies, we know that Sarah Connor dies of cancer, and that has been kept here. The series is unlike anything I’ve seen on network television before. It is big like a Terminator movie is with high action and great visual effects.

This makes me wonder if the series will be able to last. The cost for it must be high, and we’ve known shows with high price tags just don’t survive long on Fox unless they have high ratings. This one does, so it does have a chance. Let’s hope it doesn’t suffer the same fate of other high cost productions such as Dark Angel and Fast lane. That will be seen in the time to come. However, one thing we don’t have to worry about on Fox is American Idol.

That series also returned this week with two nights of audition coverage. We see some of the best, and a lot of the worst. These are always fun to see. Ratings for the premiere of American Idol were down ten percent this year, but over thirty million still tuned in to watch. Audition coverage will continue on through February.
