Darren Star’s had a pretty colourful career, he’s credited as the creator of numerous prominent shows including “Melrose Place”, “Beverly Hills 90210″, “Sex & The City” and most recently “Miss Match”. But now, it seems, he’s keen to take on a new challenge. Along with CBS, Star is looking to take hugely successful Youtube series—”We Need Girlfriends“—out of the low quality flash player and onto mainstream TV.

“We Need Girlfriends” is an independently produced web series following the lives of 3 new-york college graduates as they cope with being simultaneously dumped by their girlfriends and re-enter the New York dating scene. Star is currently involved in producing pilots of 2 shows for ABC and Fox and is writing and producing “Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl” for HBO.

The CBS show will simply be called “Girlfriends” and Star will adopt the role of “Executive Producer”. Steven Tsapelas, Angel Acevedo and Brian Amyot will continue to write the scripts for the show (they may well end up writing a lot more scripts pretty soon), however, it’s likely that the original cast of Patrick Cohen, Seth Kirschner and Evan Bass will get the boot.

The fusion of Star, CBS and Ragtag productions (The original WNG production team) will definitely produce an interesting result, although I have to wonder if we’ll see a certain clash of personalities. It will also be interesting to see if the CBS version will be as well received as Ragtag’s Youtube version.
