    • News broke on Saturday that Golden Girl Beatrice Arthur died, and the television world mourns. As a fan of Golden Girls, Bea and her character Dorothy were a staple of my weekly television viewing diet. She died early Saturday morning with her family by her side of cancer. Earlier this year, we lost another of the Golden Girls, Estelle Getty.  Bea wasn’t just known as one of the four golden girls though. She had a career that spanned four decades.

Starting her first appearances on television. These goes as far back as Bea was known as Maude. A character that was created by Norman Lear as the cousin as Edith Bunker. Maude went up against Archie Bunker on their series, and the character became so popular, she was spun off to her own series in 1972, Maude. This is a series I even remember from my young childhood.

Bea Arthur is a true legend. A woman known for comic ability, and the ability to say whatever was needed for her character. Strong characters all. In recent years, she has appeared in Curb Your Enthusiasm and Malcolm in the Middle. It is hard to see another legend pass so quickly. When Estelle Getty passed on, it hit everyone hard. To lose another true golden girl is just heartbreaking. Both Rue McClanahan and Betty White had comments to say about their friend.

Rue: “[Thirty-seven] years ago she showed me how to be very brave in playing comedy. I’ll miss that courage. And I’ll miss that voice.”

Betty: “I knew it would hurt, I just didn’t know it would hurt this much. I’m so happy that she received her Lifetime Achievement Award while she was still with us, so she could appreciate that. She was such a big part of my life.”

Rest in peace, Bea. Thank you for being our friend. You will be missed by many.
