Law and Order SVU: Where Did the Edginess Go?
-

Law and Order Special Victim’s Unit is the most popular spin-off of the long running Law and Order. Since 1999, the show has boasted some good acting, great writing, and a fair amount of edginess. This season, though, things seem a bit different. The plots, the characters, all of it, seem a bit tired.
Christopher Meloni is still one of the better actors on TV, but the meaty elements of his character often get played off, making it seem like the show is moving in the direction of melodrama. The show has been particularly hard to stomach the past few weeks. A few weeks back, Meloni’s character, Elliot Stabler, was blinded during a confrontation with a criminal. Or was he? It turns out there was no permanent damage. I’m not the only one who wanted to see what Meloni could have done with that situation. In the following weeks, there was a car accident followed by a roadside baby delivery by Olivia Benson, (AKA ultra-popular Mariska Hargitay), and the ongoing romantic undercurrents between the two leads that threaten to turn into a soapy melodrama any week now.
What does SVU need? More Ice-T? As fun as that might be for a few weeks, Ice is probably best in his supporting role.
Somehow, the show’s powers-that-be have to get back to the show’s strengths or else just call it quits.

A bit about Josh
Josh lives in the Midwestern U.S. He probably spends too much time in front of the TV, but is able to justify that fact by writing the odd article about what he watches. Josh also writes about the media, culture, and travel.

You really think it’s the harmless UST between the leads that’s turning the show into a soap, while Elliot was separated for two years; then asked to come home; then never did come home; then accidentally got his 40 year old ex-wife pregnant (sex crimes cop, not a stretch to say he should know better) after a traumatic case; then hesitated some more; then she begged him to come home because she was pregnant; then he suspected he might not be the father of the child; then his partner delivered the baby in the scene of a car crash where Kathy almost died? IMHO it’s the E/K storyline that’s incredibly soapish and an insult to the viewers’ intelligence. E/O, thank Heavens, was always subtle and not a poor plot device like the Stablers’ storyline.

i think that law and order has become too much like a soapopera. this doesn’t mean that i don’t still enjoy watching the sexy olivia benson, and the smart elliot stabler, as well as the sophisticated ada alex cabet and…the other one. but it seems like it is heading uncarestically fast towards a soapopera.
