The Golden Globes seem infatuated with the medical drama House. Or at least with lead actor Hugh Laurie. He has won Best Actor in a Drama Series for the past two years. Earlier today, it was announced that Laurie was nominated for a third consecutive time. The Golden Globes are usually known for spreading around the love, so a third straight award for Laurie would be unprecedented.

Other notable nominations for the award include Showtime’s The Tudors, which follows the lives of medieval Britain’s most powerful family. Jonathan Rhys Meyers was also nominated for his portrayal of a young Henry the 8th.

Entourage managed to grab a few nominations for best comedy, while no one was surprised to see funnyman Steve Carell’s name amongst the list of nominees for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

Nominations for newcomers include multiple nods to both the hilarious Pushing Daisies and the Glenn Close legal drama, Damages.

Though Golden Globes do not make or break small screen actors or series, the Hollywood Foreign Press seems to recognize quality more than many other award-giving bodies. I’m sure there is a fair amount of politics involved, and, while good shows usually walk away with the hardware, many deserving folks get left out. My favorite, The Wire, has never been up for a Globe (too edgy, perhaps).

The Golden Globe Awards will be passed out to those deemed worthy on January 13th. Though the TV industry’s biggest prize remains the Emmy, the Globes provide a showcase for the best TV has to offer.

(A note about Globe favorite Hugh Laurie: I recently discovered a DVD collection of a show he did in the early nineties with comedian Stephen Fry. Titled, unsurprisingly, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, this comedy sketch show is HILARIOUS, especially if you are a fan of British comedy. It ran for 4 seasons, all of which can now be found on DVD.)
