    • There are few that can capture an audience like this one actress did. Estelle Getty with her role on The Golden Girls as Sophia Petrillo succeeded. The actress had a long life, and she passed away just a few short days before what would have been her eighty-fifth birthday. She is known for the wise cracking Sophia that first appeared on NBC’s The Golden Girls. To this day, The Golden Girls airs in syndication on Lifetime.

Sophia didn’t stick to her neighborhood. She took her character to many other series including Blossom, Empty Nest, Nurses and The Golden Palace. Sophia was a fan and series favorite during much of the 1980s and 1990s. She left her mark that is for her sure. She stopped performing in 2000 when she became ill. The last few years of her life were spent suffering from advanced dementia.

Her humor and life will not be soon forgotten. Many fans were sad to hear of this one woman’s passing, long after she left the television world. In tribute to Getty, Lifetime aired a marathon of some of her best episodes from The Golden Girls. As a fan of the series and of Sophia, I was saddened myself to hear of this actresses’s passing.

The Golden Girls was a part of what I call the golden era of NBC, no pun intended. In the weeks ahead, I plan to take a look at some of these series and others from other networks along with actors and actresses in the business. All this is a part of the new Teevieo Spotlight coming to you each weekend!
