The rumors have been flying for about a year now: An Office spinoff is in the works. Well, the boys in NBC’s back room have finally come through. This rumor was, in fact, true. NBC officially announced that a spin-off of the Office will begin airing next season. The premiere will reportedly be held until February 1st of ‘09. It will air after the Super Bowl. The show will then move to Thursday nights and be preceded by the original Office.

The CSI franchise worked for CBS. Why not try the same with a show that isn’t Law and Order? NBC’s anemic ratings call for something drastic. Not that a second Office is drastic. It’s bound to be a hit, at least at the beginning.

So who is going to rule over the new Office? Rumors abound after the clickRainn Wilson was one of the early names in the rumor mill. Producers have been keeping mum, but Dwight would be the one character already on the show that you’d want to see more of. The question then would be, which series will The Office II end up like, the hit Frasier (with Kelsey “Frasier” Grammer from Cheers) or Joey (the Friends spin-off that died a quick and brutal death). Some industry insiders are saying that the core Office cast will not be shuffled.

If so, then who will join the club with Carell and Ricky Gervais. Big names have been dropped. Mike Myers, Martin Short, even Jim Carey. The last being unlikely but fun to think about.

NBC has a chance to have a second hit on its hands. It also seems that this opportunity could get blown easily. Sitcoms rely more on actors than premise. With CSI and Law and Order, its possible to sell the premise rather than the acting and writing. To a certain extent, that might be true with the Office as well, but if the powers-that-be can’t get a good cast together, the Office II might be doomed. I, for one, can’t picture an Office without BOTH Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill.
