    • imagesrw.jpgNot literally, but this next season of The Real World will mark its twentieth. In 1992, MTV had an idea.. Gather a small group of people together, and put them in one place to live together for a period of a few months. Have them sleep, eat and drink together to see what happens when they start to interact. Right from the very first episodes, there was tension. Somehow MTV knew it had a winner, and it continued on with more seasons of the series, one per year. In recent years, MTV has jumped to two seasons a year throwing people together in places around the country and the world. The most recent season was set in Sydney, Australia. The next was filmed in Hollywood, and it is set to premiere in the weeks ahead.

The Real World was one of the first series in the reality show genre. Some may even credit it with creating the genre. Many shows have followed since its premiere. It has even created more series for MTV with spin-offs such as Road Rules and the challenges that air throughout the year. The Gauntlet III just wrapped up its season a couple of weeks ago, but Road Rules has come and gone. Series like Big Brother and Survivor immediately come to mind as coming along following The Real World. Both have been incredibly successful programs for CBS.

This week MTV is airing The Real World Awards which will allow us to catch up with some past Real World house mates. Some stayed out of the limelight and away from the challenges. I hope we get updates on some former cast mates even if they don’t make an appearance at the awards. It’ll be interesting to see what happened with some of them. As a fan of the series, I am not sure how I keep watching. I’ve watched every season except for two, the fourth and the tenth. I tune in every season, and I’m hooked right back in. There is just something interesting about watching people forced to live together and interact for good or bad. I think that’s why people keep tuning in.
