WGA Strike Officially Over
-
Fourteen weeks. A lack of television. Writers on the picket lines with support of their actor friends. Today all of that is officially done. At least until May 2011, which is when this current contact goes til. Fans of television and movies can now breathe a little easier. We all know how difficult the last three months have been. We’ve seen a lot of our favorite shows just disappear. Some of the new series that came out were never given a real chance to live. As soon as the strike hit, production was halted, and now some will never ever return.
Remember how hyped up the new Bionic Womanseries was? Over the summer, it was everywhere. NBC made it their new show to watch. Low ratings plagued it after it received good premiere ratings. They just kept dropping, and when the strike hit, this series was hit hard. Now we have to wonder about other new series. Over on CBS, we have Cane and Moonlight. Two shows that I watched. Moonlight a bit more faithfully, and it happened to win a People’s Choice Award last month. Here’s hoping that helps CBS keep it around.
With this new contract, the writers ended up getting exactly what they wanted. Their concern was new media. We’re talking DVD’s and Internet downloads. The writers weren’t seeing anything from these items, and they wanted to. It made sense to me. They still wrote the material. Why shouldn’t they see some of the profit from it? Now they will as a part of this new contract. Hopefully, we won’t have this happen again in May 2011. At least then we’d have the summer months to work things out. Next up we have rumblings of an actor strike this summer being possible. Let’s cross our fingers that doesn’t happen.
