So far, the strike by the Writer’s Guild of America has meant little to the average viewer. However, with the networks’ supply of new episodes nearly gone, things are going to get worse. NBC’s The Office is already in reruns, and most other shows will be presenting their last new episode in the next week or two.

While there may be a period of withdrawal for fans (“What am I going to do without new CSI episodes 3 nights a week?”), I wonder if the networks will suffer.

In the past few weeks, American audiences have received a heavy dose of reality TV. Shows like Dancing With the Stars and The Bachelor killed in the Nielson ratings. Network execs have got to be thinking of more of these shows as replacements for scripted dramas and sitcoms. I’m sure someone could come up with a reality version of CSI where contestants sift through crime scenes looking for clues to solve the mystery and win cash. Something like that might be a lot closer to appearing on the small screen than we think.
Yes, the WGA strike will end. Some rumors say very soon, others say it will take a while. Whatever the case, TV viewers will more than likely be in for a large dose of reality.
